If you have had an opportunity to peek behind the Lakeshore building lately, you will undoubtedly notice the beginnings of what will be a fabulous asset to Academy students, faculty and community. The result of your generosity and support of Paddle Raise 2021:
Inspiring Students to Dream Big, we have broken ground on our new greenhouse!
Led by Kieran Neal, owner of Longbuilds and co-founder of Beaverland Farms, a urban community farm located in the Brightmoor area of Detroit, construction of our student greenhouse has already begun.
Estimated to be completed by January, the greenhouse will allow year-round growing and cultivation opportunities.
Whether it be in growing food for our Farm-to-Table classes, partnering with our STEAM students to develop vertical planters or setting up a Farmer’s Market in the gazebo for our business electives, the intent is for our greenhouse to have cross-disciplinary uses for students at every age and stage of
their Academy experience.
Supporting our cornerstones of global citizenship, empathy and leadership, “we intend to use the greenhouse to benefit the health of the ecosystem, contribute data for sustainable growing practices in urban environments and provide healthy, nutritious food for our school community,” says Meghan Black, Technology and Learning Specialist at the Academy.
Stay tuned for updates regarding this exciting project!
