It is part of The Grosse Pointe Academy’s responsibility to educate children not only to succeed academically, but to be responsible leaders for the rest of their lives. Whether its exploring potential career paths, discovering revolutionary technology, learning to tell stories, or understanding the science behind their favorite devices, experiential learning at the Academy takes classroom lessons and applies them to a student’s ever-expanding universe.
Experiential Learning- Example
In the Engineering Empathy elective, students follow the steps of the Engineering Design Process while learning about assistive devices and biomedical engineering. In this class, students are introduced to engineers’ creative, real-world involvement in caring for the human body. First, the students completed a design-build-test activity to learn the steps of the engineering design process. Then, student teams collaborate to design an off-road wheelchair, a portable wheelchair ramp, and an automatic floor sweeping robot. During this class, students brainstorm ideas, identify suitable materials and demonstrate different methods of representing solutions to their design problems.
